ACSO captures man wanted for kidnapping and murder in Copiah County

Adams County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Group has successfully captured Tyrell Bridges, a man wanted in Copiah County for alleged kidnapping, murder, and burning the body of 54-year-old Billy Ray Jones Jr.

Assistance from Copiah County

Sheriff Travis Patten of Adams County stated that they received a call from Copiah County Sheriff Byron Swilley seeking assistance in locating Bridges. Swilley provided arrest warrants for Bridges, prompting the activation of the Special Operations Group.

Swift Arrest

Within an hour of receiving the warrants, the Special Operations Group located Bridges on Windy Hill Road in Natchez and apprehended him without incident. Sheriff Patten personally assisted in the capture of Bridges.

Legal Proceedings

After being taken into custody, Bridges was transported to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office where he was booked as a fugitive from justice. He is set to be handed over to the Copiah County authorities to face charges of kidnapping and murder.

Background of the Suspect

Bridges had been released early from the Mississippi Department of Corrections in August 2023. In February of the following year, he allegedly assaulted two individuals, one of whom was nearly beaten to death. Bridges had been on the run since then, evading capture until now.

Discovery of the Burned Body

The discovery of Billy Ray Jones Jr.’s burned body on the side of a Copiah County highway had prompted the search for Bridges. The body was found near Rockport Road, northeast of Wesson and south of Georgetown.

Arrest of Matthew Nelson

Prior to Bridges’ capture, Matthew Nelson, 50, had been arrested and charged with the same offences of kidnapping and murder. Sheriff Swilley confirmed that Bridges was also wanted for these crimes.

Sheriff Patten’s Gratitude

Sheriff Patten commended the swift and efficient work of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office in apprehending Bridges. He expressed pride in the dedication and professionalism of his team, highlighting their commitment to keeping the community safe.

Overall, the successful capture of Tyrell Bridges brings closure to a tragic chapter in Copiah County. The collaboration between law enforcement agencies has ensured that justice will be served for the victims and their families.
