Details of the Sparks police Department Shooting Incident

The Sparks Police Department has provided new information regarding an officer-involved shooting that took place in the Rock and Greenbrae area, resulting in injuries to three officers.

Sequence of Events

The incident unfolded at approximately 1:40 p.m. on March 29 when an officer from the Sparks Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a Ford Expedition lacking license plates on Greenbrae Drive.

Upon approaching the driver, identified as Anthony Wade from Reno, the officer was met with a sudden display of aggression. Wade swiftly drew a gun and fired at the officer through the driver’s side window, causing severe injuries to the officer’s neck and scalp.

In response, the officer returned fire as Wade fled the scene, driving east on Greenbrae and disregarding a stop sign at the intersection with Rock Blvd. The situation escalated when a U-Haul truck collided with Wade’s vehicle, rendering it immobile.

Subsequent Events

Following the crash, Wade abandoned his car and attempted to evade capture on foot. Meanwhile, a witness reported seeing an individual armed with a gun heading east.

Law enforcement received a distress call indicating that a black male had forcibly entered a residence on Prospect Avenue. The occupant, who was preparing food in the kitchen, resorted to self-defense by using a knife to repel Wade, prompting him to flee.

Multiple agencies collaborated to establish a perimeter and issue a shelter-in-place directive for residents in the vicinity. The Sparks Police Department, along with the Reno Police Department and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, initiated a systematic search for Wade.

Hostage Situation

Further investigations uncovered that Wade had taken a woman hostage in another property. Officers managed to make contact with the hostage around 2:00 p.m. as she attempted to leave the premises in a vehicle on Prospect Avenue.

Upon being informed of the shelter-in-place order, the woman complied and re-entered her garage. Unbeknownst to the officers, Wade had coerced her to leave the search area and concealed himself in the vehicle’s rear compartment.

Confrontation and Resolution

A deputy from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office spotted the captive woman and approached the residence, only to be met with gunfire from Wade. In the ensuing exchange, the deputy and a Sparks police officer sustained injuries but were promptly rescued by their colleagues.

Wade managed to flee once more, seeking refuge in a neighbouring property. Despite efforts to negotiate a peaceful surrender over several hours, Wade remained unresponsive.

Conclusion of the Incident

SWAT officers eventually entered the premises and were met with resistance from Wade, who opened fire. In the ensuing confrontation, Wade was fatally wounded. Investigations later revealed that he was armed with a .40 caliber semiautomatic handgun.

The entire ordeal, spanning over 8 hours, culminated in the safe resolution of the situation. The injured officers received medical treatment and have since been discharged from the hospital.
