Investigation of Foiled Robbery Continues

The Cebu City police Office is currently working closely with the South Korean Consulate Office as they delve deeper into the recent foiled robbery involving Korean nationals in Barangay Banilad, Cebu City. The incident, which took place on the evening of April 2, resulted in the death of one of the suspects.

Background Checks and Arrests

According to Pol. Maj. Romeo Caacoy Jr., Chief of Cebu City Police Station 4, background checks are being conducted on the three suspects, all of whom are of Korean descent. The suspects were accused of robbing a Korean businessman, which led to a confrontation with the authorities. One suspect was fatally shot during the encounter, while the other two were apprehended and are now facing charges related to robbery and frustrated homicide.

Details of the Incident

The Cebu City Police received a distress call around 9 p.m. on April 2, reporting that three armed Korean nationals had allegedly robbed another Korean national within a subdivision in Barangay Banilad. In response, Cebu City Police Station 4, along with the SWAT Team and Regional Intelligence Division (RID-7), swiftly arrived at the scene.

Upon their arrival, the police attempted to negotiate with the suspects to surrender peacefully. However, one of the suspects opened fire on the responding officers, resulting in an injury to a member of the RID-7 team. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, one of the suspects, identified as Choi Sun Yong, was fatally wounded, while the other two, Kim Yong Hee and Kim Jun Hee, were taken into custody.

Recovery of Stolen Items

During the operation, the police were able to rescue the victim, Lee Sangdon, along with two of his house helpers. Additionally, authorities recovered three firearms, P200,000 in cash, jewellery, and two Philippe Patek watches valued at P25,000,000. The victim, a businessman renting a property in the upscale subdivision, was targeted by the suspects, who were temporarily staying in a local hotel.

Ongoing Investigation

Major Caacoy emphasized that the investigation is far from over. Authorities are delving into the backgrounds of both the suspects and the victim, as well as attempting to establish any potential connections between them. The police are committed to uncovering the full extent of the circumstances surrounding the failed robbery and subsequent shootout.

Refusal to Provide Statements

Despite attempts by the media to obtain statements from the arrested Korean nationals, they have chosen to remain silent on the matter. The investigation continues to unfold, shedding light on the complexities of the case and the individuals involved..
