Tragic Crash Claims Two Lives on State Highway 31
Hopewell Township was struck by tragedy on Sunday night as a fatal motor vehicle crash on State Highway 31 claimed the lives of two individuals. According to the Hopewell Township police, the incident occurred at approximately 10:48 PM and involved a collision between a blue Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Grey Nissan Maxima.
The driver of the Jeep, identified as 32-year-old Kongmi Khu, sustained minor injuries in the crash. After receiving treatment at Capital Health Regional Medical Center, Khu was released into custody and now faces charges of two counts of Vehicular Manslaughter, along with additional charges. Two female passengers in the rear seats, aged 32 and 35, were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in serious but stable condition. Tragically, the front seat passenger, a 13-year-old male, succumbed to his injuries after being taken to Cooper University Medical Center.
At the scene, the driver of the Nissan, a 59-year-old male, was pronounced dead. The initial investigations conducted by Officer Robert Voorhees and Detective Christopher Collins of the Hopewell Township Police Department, alongside detectives from the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, suggest that the Jeep was traveling south on State Highway 31. It is believed that Khu attempted to pass two vehicles in a no-passing zone, resulting in the collision with the northbound Nissan.
