Fatal Shooting Incident Under Investigation in Houston
Houston police are currently investigating a tragic shooting incident that occurred on Sunday afternoon, February 11, resulting in the death of a suspect and injuries to a juvenile male and an adult male. The incident took place at 3700 Southwest Freeway (South U.S. Highway 59) around 1:55 p.m.
The suspect has been identified as Genessee Moreno, a 36-year-old female. The officer who discharged his weapon, Officer C. Moreno, is assigned to the HPD South Central Patrol Division. Fortunately, he was not injured during the incident. Additionally, a Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission (TABC) officer also discharged his weapon and remained unharmed.
According to reports from the HPD Special Investigations Unit, Sergeant M. Ynosencio, D. Lane, and Detectives N. Arellano, J. Montalvo, W. Elliott, O. Flores V. Praxedes, J. Kosler, and T. Vaca, the suspect, wearing a trench coat, and a juvenile male entered a church at the aforementioned address. The suspect produced a rifle from under their coat, forcibly entered the lobby, and began shooting.
Officer Moreno, who happened to be off-duty and working an extra job at the location, heard the gunfire and quickly approached to investigate. At that moment, Officer Moreno engaged in a firefight with the suspect. Simultaneously, an off-duty TABC officer, also present at the scene, witnessed the exchange of gunfire between the suspect and Officer Moreno and decided to intervene.
As a result of the confrontation, the suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by Houston Fire Department paramedics. The juvenile male, only 7 years old, suffered critical injuries and was immediately transported to an area hospital for treatment. The adult male, aged 57, sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and was transported to an area hospital in stable condition.
In accordance with standard procedure for officer-involved shooting incidents within Houston city limits, the case is being thoroughly investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
