Shooter at Texas Megachurch Identified as Genesse Ivonne Moreno, Motive Still Unknown

In a tragic incident that unfolded at Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, a shooter opened fire during a service, with authorities now identifying the shooter as Genesse Ivonne Moreno. The 36-year-old Moreno, who had a history of mental illness, entered the church wearing a trenchcoat and carrying a backpack. The attack, carried out using an AR-style rifle, led to an exchange of gunfire with two off-duty officers.

The shooting took place between services at the Houston megachurch, causing panic and chaos among the worshippers. During the attack, Moreno’s 7-year-old son was shot in the head and remains in critical condition.

Authorities have yet to establish a motive for the shooting, but investigators are looking into a dispute involving Moreno and the family of Moreno’s ex-husband. Moreno, who used both male and female aliases, had a history of mental illness and had been placed under emergency detention in 2016.

Antisemitic writings were found by investigators, indicating a possible motive related to Moreno’s former in-laws, who are Jewish. The rifle used in the attack also had a Palestine sticker on the buttstock. Police described Moreno as a “lone wolf” who acted alone.

Further investigation led authorities to search Moreno’s residence in Conroe, where prior arrests and a divorce and child custody battle in 2022 were discovered. Court records also revealed that Moreno’s ex-mother-in-law had sought advice from pastoral staff at Lakewood during the custody dispute, although no staff members familiar with the contact have been found.

It was determined that Moreno had legally purchased the rifle used in the attack in December, and investigators are now trying to determine how Moreno obtained it. Moreno was also found to be carrying a .22 caliber rifle into the church.

The shooter and her son entered the church building shortly before the 2pm Spanish service, with Moreno pointing a gun at an unarmed security guard. Once inside, Moreno began firing, prompting the off-duty officers, Christopher Moreno and Adrian Herrera, to return fire and ultimately kill the shooter. None of the violence spilled into the main sanctuary, and the shooting lasted several minutes.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are still trying to determine if Moreno’s son was accidentally shot by one of the officers. Police confirmed that there was no bomb, despite the shooter’s claim.

Moreno had a troubled past, with criminal charges ranging from forgery to assault. In court filings, Moreno had made claims of being threatened and followed, even alleging to have received text messages from FBI Director Christopher Wray.

Family members of Moreno have declined to comment on the incident..
