Mother Opens Fire at Houston Megachurch, Leaving Two Injured and Herself dead
Investigators are still trying to determine the motive behind a tragic shooting incident at a popular Houston megachurch on Sunday. Genesse Ivonne Moreno, a 36-year-old mother, opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle at the Lakewood Church, injuring two people, including her own 7-year-old son, before being killed by law enforcement.
According to Houston Police Chief Troy Finner, Moreno confronted an unarmed security guard outside the church and forced her way in. Wearing a trench coat and backpack, she entered the converted sports arena and began firing in a hallway with an AR-platform rifle. It is believed that she fired around 30 bullets.
Fortunately, two off-duty officers were present at the church and engaged the shooter. They were able to fatally hit Moreno, but not before her son was shot in the head. The young boy is currently in critical condition at a hospital.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but investigators are looking into whether it was politically motivated or carried out by a mentally disturbed individual. Moreno had a lengthy criminal history and was going through a bitter divorce at the time of the incident.
Authorities have searched Moreno’s home and found substances consistent with the manufacture of explosive devices. She legally purchased the AR-15 used in the attack and also had a .22 caliber weapon in her bag.
