**Update: 7-Year-Old Boy Shot in Houston Megachurch Identified as Shooter’s Son**
A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday inside Pastor Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston, where a 7-year-old boy was shot in the head during a shooting. The latest update reveals that the child is the son of the deceased shooter, according to the police.
Previously thought to be a 5-year-old, the young boy remains in critical condition as of Monday. The shooting occurred when an exchange of gunfire took place between two law enforcement officers and the child’s mother, identified as 36-year-old Genesse Moreno. The mother was armed with two firearms, including an AR-15 rifle, which she immediately started firing inside the church.
Police Commander Christopher Hassig of the Houston Police Department’s homicide division stated that multiple shots were exchanged between all three individuals involved, making it unclear who shot the child. Sadly, Moreno, who had a known history of mental illness, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation is still in its early stages, but police have discovered some potentially significant details. A sticker on the AR-15 rifle that said “Palestine” was found, and anti-Semitic writings were left behind by Moreno. Additionally, she had a family dispute with her ex-husband and some of his Jewish family members, indicating a possible motive for the attack.
It is worth noting that Moreno had used several different aliases in the past, including male ones. She had been placed under an emergency detention order by Houston police in 2016 due to her mental health issues. Despite this, she legally purchased one of the firearms used in the church shooting back in December.
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner emphasized that the attack is not currently being classified as a hate crime, urging the public to avoid jumping to conclusions. Finner stated that mental illness and various factors were at play, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive investigation.
