Tragedy Strikes Texas Megachurch as Shooter with History of Mental Illness Opens Fire

A devastating incident unfolded at Lakewood Church in Houston on Sunday, when a shooter opened fire, leaving behind a trail of destruction and critically injuring their own 7-year-old son. The shooter, identified as Genesse Ivonne Moreno, was ultimately killed by security officers. The authorities revealed that Moreno had a history of mental illness and had used an AR-style rifle during the attack.

Houston police Commander Chris Hassig provided further details about the shooter during a press conference. He mentioned that Moreno, who was 36 years old, had sometimes used both male and female aliases, but investigators had determined that Moreno identified as female. Hassig also revealed that Moreno had been placed under emergency detention in 2016 due to her mental health condition, although no additional details were provided.

While it is still too early to determine the motive behind the shooting, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner stated that investigators were looking into a dispute involving Moreno and the family of her ex-husband. Additionally, antisemitic writings were discovered, further deepening the investigation. Hassig emphasized that Moreno had acted alone, describing her as a “lone wolf” without any affiliation to a larger group.

Heroic Guards Prevented Further Bloodshed

The confrontation between Moreno and the security officers, off-duty Houston police officer Christopher Moreno and Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission Agent Adrian Herrera, took place in a church hallway. Both guards bravely returned fire, successfully neutralizing the threat. The violence did not spill into the main sanctuary, thanks to the swift actions of the guards.

Despite their heroic efforts, Moreno’s son, who had accompanied her to the church, sustained a gunshot wound to the head and remained in critical condition. Authorities are still investigating whether the child was accidentally shot by one of the officers during the exchange of gunfire.

A Community in Shock

Lakewood Church is a prominent place of worship, regularly attended by approximately 45,000 people each week. The shocking incident sent shockwaves throughout the congregation and the wider community. Pastor Joel Osteen, who took over leadership of the church after his father’s passing, expressed gratitude that the shooting did not occur during the larger late Sunday morning service.

Alan Guity, a long-time member of the church, recounted the terrifying moment when he heard gunshots and sought refuge with his mother inside the sanctuary. The gunfire continued as they lay flat on the floor, fearing for their lives.

As the investigation continues, the community stands united in grief and support for the victims of this tragic event.
