On Monday evening, an officer-involved shooting took place in New Castle, Indiana, prompting an investigation by the Indiana State Police. The incident occurred when officers from the New Castle Police Department responded to a shots fired call in the 200 block of N. 29th Street. Upon arrival, they established a perimeter around the residence and attempted to communicate with the individuals inside.

After negotiating, two individuals were successfully removed from the house. However, the suspect, later identified as 59-year-old Donald Guffey Jr., refused to cooperate and barricaded himself inside the residence. Despite repeated attempts by the police to establish communication, Guffey remained unresponsive.

The situation escalated when the SWAT team arrived. Officers continued to call out to Guffey, but he approached a front window of the house with a firearm and engaged the officers. In response, two officers from the New Castle SWAT team discharged their department-issued rifles, resulting in Guffey being struck once. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and fortunately, no officers were injured during the incident.

The Indiana State Police are currently conducting an active investigation into the matter. Once completed, the case will be turned over to the Henry County Prosecutor for review.
