Born on February 17, 1951, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, JoAnne A. Epps dedicated her life to education and public service. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Trinity College in Washington, D.C., before pursuing her Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School. Epps began her career as a public defender in Philadelphia, advocating for justice and fairness in the legal system.

Epps joined Temple University in 1985 as a member of the faculty at the Beasley School of Law.
