Bishop Emeritus Raul José Martirez, a distinguished alumnus of the UST Central Seminary and Faculty of Sacred Theology, has passed away at the age of 86. His death was announced by Christ the King Parish Greenmeadows, where he resided, on Monday, Sept. 2.

The parish expressed gratitude for the gift of Bishop Raul, fondly remembering his warm smiles and loving words during his time with the community. The retired bishop died at 11:24 p.m. due to a stroke, as confirmed by the Diocese of San Jose de Antique.
Martirez, born on Feb. 9, 1938, in New Washington, Aklan, entered the UST Central Seminary in 1957 and earned his theology degree in 1960. He was ordained as a priest in 1961 and elevated to the episcopate in 1983.
Throughout his career, Martirez served in various capacities, including as the rector of St. Pius X Seminary in Roxas City, Capiz, and as the bishop of the Diocese of San Jose de Antique. He was also a member of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Permanent Council.
In 2002, Martirez resigned as bishop due to health concerns. The wake for Bishop Martirez will be held from Sept. 3 to 5 at Christ the King Parish Greenmeadows Main Church in Quezon City, with a funeral Mass presided over by Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula scheduled for Sept. 6.
