Tragic Shooting Incident Claims Life of Final-Year Student in Anambra State
A heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, where Noel Okechukwu, a final-year student at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, lost his life in a tragic shooting. The 27-year-old student was allegedly shot dead by security operatives on August 17, 2024, at Senator Stella Oduah’s Estate in Akili-Ozizor Community.

Reports indicate that the fatal shooting occurred when local vigilante operatives attached to the estate accused Okechukwu of involvement in looting and vandalizing property within the estate. However, the victim’s family disputes this claim, stating that he was on his way to buy fresh fish when the incident occurred.
Rex Okechukwu, Noel’s father, recounted the events leading to his son’s untimely death. He explained, “Noel was heading to the estate to purchase fish when he was stopped at the gate by the security guards. An altercation ensued, during which one of the guards shot him. After shooting him, they tried to revive him by giving him water, but he died shortly after.”
Following the tragic incident, the grief-stricken father has filed a petition with the Divisional Police Officer at the Ogbaru Police Division, Atani, seeking justice for his son. The petition alleges that the security guards had no legal right to take his son’s life and calls for accountability.
In response to the petition, the Divisional Police Officer, Mr. I. Andrew, provided a different account of the events, stating that the deceased was part of a group involved in looting and vandalizing property in the estate. The case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation, as the grieving family continues to demand justice for their beloved son, insisting that he was wrongfully killed.
