The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that a 2010 Jeep Liberty, driven by Joselin M. Laynez Flores from Guatemala, was traveling southbound on Interstate 35 when tragedy struck just north of Johnson Drive in Merriam.

The Jeep collided with a stalled 2007 Chevy Equinox, driven by Paula S. Baird of Kansas City, Kansas, resulting in a chain reaction of events. Benjamin D. Van Buskirk, a 17-year-old from Olathe, was struck and killed by the Jeep as he tried to assist after the initial collision. Van Buskirk had been a passenger in a 2008 Honda CRV driven by Ammar M. Aljishi, 17, of Spring Hill, which was stopped on the highway’s right shoulder.
Van Buskirk tragically lost his life at the scene and was transported to Forensic Medical, while Baird was taken to KU Medical Center for treatment. Fortunately, Laynez Flores and a passenger in the Jeep were unharmed due to proper restraint use, according to the KHP.
