The Montana Human Rights Network (MHRN) has called on the Montana University System to fire Trenin Bayless, a postdoctoral fellow at Montana Tech who is running for the Montana Legislature as a Republican. Bayless has been accused of espousing white nationalist views, including advocating for the extermination of Jews and members of the LGBTQ+ community. He is also said to be a proponent of a social theory known as “accelerationism.”
Bayless, who currently resides in Butte and teaches at Montana Tech, has denied the allegations against him. He claims that he is not the individual behind the posts and writings attributed to him. However, the MHRN, along with a blog dedicated to unmasking white nationalists, believes that there are enough clues to identify Bayless as the author of the controversial content.
In response to the allegations, Bayless has threatened to file a lawsuit against the MHRN. He has also emphasised that he is not a white nationalist or supremacist and has described the accusations as “childish.” Bayless, who is making his second attempt at political office, is running for a seat in the Montana House of Representatives in a traditionally Democratic district.
The Montana Republican Party has been contacted regarding Bayless’s candidacy, but has not responded to requests for comment. Bayless maintains that he is focused on addressing issues such as housing and property taxes in Montana, rather than engaging in controversies surrounding his alleged white nationalist beliefs.

The MHRN has sent a letter to Montana Tech and the Board of Regents, urging the university to terminate Bayless’s employment. The writings attributed to Bayless, under the online alias “TurnCoat,” detail his support for “acceleration theory,” a concept that advocates for hastening the collapse of society to create a white, Christian homeland. Bayless is said to promote the infiltration of all levels of society by white nationalists, preparing for a coming collapse that will allow them to seize power.
Devin Burghart, an expert on extremist groups, has highlighted the dangerous implications of accelerationist ideologies. He warns that such beliefs could incite violence and provoke societal unrest. The posts attributed to Bayless also mention the formation of small, high-trust groups to carry out coordinated actions in the event of political instability.
The MHRN and other advocacy groups are urging the Montana University System to take swift action against Bayless to uphold the values of diversity and academic freedom. They argue that allowing a white nationalist to remain in a position of influence within an academic institution undermines the safety and well-being of students and tarnishes the reputation of the university.
