Man Shot and Critically Injured by Anchorage Police

A man was shot and critically injured by Anchorage police on Monday morning after allegedly firing a shotgun at officers and threatening others, according to a charging document filed this week.

Incident Details

The incident began when officers were called to a Circle K gas station on Bragaw Street after an employee reported a man in camouflage clothing yelling at a customer while holding a shotgun. The man was later identified as 51-year-old Damien Dollison.

Surveillance footage from the gas station showed Dollison arriving at around 2:30 a.m. on Monday. After purchasing a drink and staying parked for about 30 minutes, Dollison was seen driving away and later returning on foot with a shotgun.

Standoff and Shooting

Witnesses reported that Dollison pointed the shotgun at a truck window and told the driver to get out, leading the driver to believe it was a carjacking. The driver armed himself with a handgun, but when Dollison fired a shot, the driver realized his safety was on. After a tense standoff, Dollison and the driver agreed to drop their weapons and leave.

Police arrived at the scene and found Dollison walking through a nearby parking lot. As officers approached him, Dollison allegedly pointed the shotgun at them and fired a shot. In response, officers shot Dollison twice, causing life-threatening injuries.

Legal Proceedings

Dollison has been charged with felony assault and remained hospitalized as of Wednesday. His criminal hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

On Thursday morning, Anchorage police identified the officers involved in the shooting as Jacob Jones and Brandon Stack. Jones was also involved in a previous shooting incident in May, where a man was fatally shot by officers after allegedly pointing a long gun at them.

Community Response

This incident marks the fifth police shooting in Anchorage since mid-May, with three resulting in fatalities. The recent shootings have raised concerns among the public, especially since officers are now equipped with body cameras but have not released any footage of the shootings.

Anchorage’s new police chief, Sean Case, has stated that the department is working on a new policy for the release of footage from “critical incidents” like police shootings to ensure transparency and accountability.

As the investigation into the shooting of Damien Dollison continues, the community awaits further updates on the case and the actions taken by law enforcement authorities..
