Ricky Ponte Faces New Charges in Fatal DUI Crash

In a tragic incident that shook the Taunton community, 29-year-old Ricky Ponte is set to face new charges related to a fatal crash that occurred back in March. The young man, who was previously charged with Negligent Motor Vehicle Homicide while Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol, Leaving the Scene of a Crash-Death Resulting, Operating Under the Influence-Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, and Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Personal Injury, will now have to answer to additional charges brought forth by a Bristol County Grand Jury.

The Fatal Crash

The incident took place on March 10 at around 9:15 p.m. when Taunton police responded to a two-car crash on Winthrop Street. One of the vehicles involved was found abandoned, with a 46-year-old passenger at the scene. The passenger informed authorities that Ponte had been driving the vehicle but fled the scene after the collision.

Shortly after, a call came in from the Irving Gas Station on Route 44 reporting a man with injuries entering the establishment. The man turned out to be Ponte himself. Emergency responders discovered a grim scene at the crash site, with 67-year-old Margaret McGowan trapped inside one of the vehicles. Tragically, McGowan succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Her 16-year-old female relative, who was also in the car, was found outside in a state of shock.

New Charges and Court Appearance

Ponte had initially faced a $25,000 cash bail, which he posted for his release. However, the grand jury indictment brought forth additional charges, including Manslaughter while OUI, Leaving the Scene of Personal Injury and Death, OUI Liquor & Serious Injury & Negligent, and Leaving the Scene of Personal Injury. Ponte is now expected to appear in Bristol County Superior Court in Fall River to answer to these new charges.

This development has left the community reeling, as they come to terms with the tragic loss of Margaret McGowan and the circumstances surrounding her untimely demise.
