Threats and Immediate Response

Reports suggest that on the same day, Yellowstone’s 9-1-1 center received a distress call regarding a woman allegedly being held against her will by a man with a firearm at a residence in Canyon Village. The woman informed law enforcement rangers that Fussner had threatened to harm her and others, including plans to carry out mass shootings during the July 4th celebrations outside the park. Responding rangers immediately located Fussner’s unoccupied vehicle in the canyon area and suspected that he was armed and dangerous.

Law Enforcement Mobilization

With Fussner still at large, over 20 National Park Service law enforcement rangers, including the park’s special response team, were swiftly deployed to ensure the safety of park visitors and employees while actively searching for the suspect. In the early hours of July 4th, these dedicated officials were stationed near Canyon Lodge when they unexpectedly encountered Fussner.

Heroic Actions and Tragic Outcome

Fussner, armed with a semi-automatic rifle, approached the service entrance of the facility and began firing shots towards the building, which was occupied by approximately 200 individuals at the time. Several rangers engaged with Fussner, resulting in an exchange of gunfire that tragically led to Fussner’s demise. Regrettably, a ranger was also injured during the altercation, but is currently in stable condition after being transported to the hospital.
