In a recent shocking incident, authorities in Maui have apprehended two individuals suspected of illegal night hunting near Oprah Winfrey’s Hawaiian property. The incident took place late at night on June 21, 2024, near the intersection of Thompson Road and Kamaʻole Road in the Kula area of Upcountry Maui. The suspects have been identified as 19-year-old Luke Allen and Ty Munoz, who were taken into custody at the Maui Police Station in Wailuku after officials observed them using a spotlight for hunting activities.

During a preliminary investigation, Allen and Munoz were found in possession of a loaded shotgun and rifle in their truck. It was discovered that they were hunting without the necessary licenses, had ammunition in their vehicle, and were trespassing on private land at night. Additionally, the rifle found with Allen was unregistered. The State Department of Land and Natural Resources has not revealed the specific animals that were being targeted during the illegal hunting expedition.
Following this distressing incident and the recent devastating wildfires in Maui, Oprah Winfrey has stepped up to offer support to the community. The former talk show host, aged 70, had previously assisted residents affected by the Hawaii wildfires in August 2023 by personally shopping for essential items at Walmart and Costco and distributing them to those in need.
Both suspects, Munoz and Allen, have been booked on multiple charges. Munoz faces charges for unlawfully storing a loaded firearm other than a pistol, hunting without a required license, trespassing on private property for night hunting without permission, and using artificial light for hunting. Allen, on the other hand, received the same charges along with additional charges for possessing unregistered firearms.
In response to the incident, Oprah Winfrey and Dwane Johnson have announced the establishment of the People’s Fund of Maui, with an initial $10 million donation from both of them. This fund aims to provide support and assistance to the community in the wake of such unfortunate events.
