New Indictment by Bristol County Grand Jury

Late last month, Ponte was indicted by a Bristol County Grand Jury on Manslaughter, Leaving the Scene of Personal Injury and Death, OUI Liquor & Serious Injury & Negligent, and Leaving the Scene of Personal Injury. These charges stem from a crash in the area of 380 Winthrop Street (Route 44) on March 10th.

The Tragic Crash

On the night of the incident, Taunton Police responded to a two-car crash involving a black Mercedes and a Honda CRV. The Mercedes was found unoccupied, with a 46-year-old passenger who revealed that Ponte had been driving the car and fled the scene after the crash. Meanwhile, first responders found the driver of the Honda CRV, 67-year-old Margaret (Peggy) McGowan, trapped inside the vehicle. Her 16-year-old relative, a passenger, was in a state of shock.

Loss of a Beloved Community Member

Margaret (Peggy) McGowan, a Fall River resident, tragically passed away on March 28 from injuries sustained in the crash. McGowan, a dedicated individual who obtained a master’s degree and worked as a Case Manager for the Department of Developmental Disabilities in Plymouth, was also known for her post-retirement role as a beloved crossing guard in the community. Her kind and caring nature earned her a community service award in 2022.

Inexcusable Actions of Ricky Jorge Ponte

According to the prosecution, video evidence shows Ponte abandoning the scene of the crash, leaving behind the injured victims. Data retrieved from Ponte’s vehicle indicated that he was driving at a high speed of 71 MPH in a 40 MPH zone and did not attempt to brake before the collision. Instead of seeking immediate help, Ponte was seen entering a gas station bleeding and later called his mother instead of emergency services.
