In a recent turn of events, authorities in Santa Clara County are seeking the public’s help in locating the families of three men who were found dead in separate incidents over four decades ago. Thanks to advancements in technology, the men have finally been identified as Alfred Sherman Anderson, Johnny Puentes, and Scotty Edward Echols.

The Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office issued a plea for assistance in locating the families of the deceased individuals. Despite extensive efforts, the office has been unable to find any relatives for these cases and is now turning to the public for help.
A Tragic Discovery
Alfred Sherman Anderson, aged 57, was discovered beneath an ATM at the rear of American Savings Bank on Santa Clara St. in San Jose on November 16, 1987. His cause of death was determined to be arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, with the manner of death classified as natural. Anderson was described as a white male, 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighing 145 pounds, with gray eyes and gray-brown hair.
Details of the Deceased
At the time of his passing, Anderson was wearing a red windbreaker with “Half Moon Bay Parks and Rec” branding, a gray-green checkered sport shirt, a gray short-sleeved pullover with “Pebble Beach” emblazoned on it, and other clothing items. The coroner’s office provided a detailed description of his attire in the hopes of identifying potential family members.
Johnny Puentes, 37, was found dead on the bank of Coyote Creek near Story Road in San Jose on September 20, 1989. His cause of death was listed as narcotic and alcohol intoxication, with the manner of death deemed a probable accident. Puentes was potentially Latino, weighing 140 pounds and standing at 5 feet 5 inches tall, with black hair.

A Mysterious Case
The coroner’s office noted that Puentes was wearing blue jeans, yellow high-top tennis shoes, and other items of clothing marked with sizes in a manner suggesting they were issued by an agency. The circumstances surrounding his death remain shrouded in mystery, prompting further investigation.
Scotty Edward Echols, aged 32, was tragically found on the railroad tracks near Monterey Road in Gilroy on July 4, 1983. His cause of death was multiple traumatic injuries, classified as an accident. Echols, a white male, stood at 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighed 210 pounds, and had distinctive brown eyes and hair. He also had a tattoo of a devil on his upper right shoulder.
Seeking Closure
The identification of these three men is part of an ongoing effort to review cases involving unidentified persons. With advancements in technology and access to databases such as the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs), previously unresolved cases are being revisited in the hopes of finding closure for the families of the deceased individuals.
