The Tragic Murder of Seven-Year-Old Sukhman
A heartbreaking incident has shaken the village of Lohara in Moga district, where seven-year-old Sukhman was allegedly murdered and dumped in a drain. The young boy’s body was discovered on July 3, but it was only on Thursday that he was identified, leading to the autopsy being conducted to determine the cause of death.

Family Background and Circumstances
Sukhman had been living with his aunt and uncle in Bakhatgarh, Barnala district, after his mother, Veerpal Kaur, remarried following the death of her first husband. The accused, also named Veerpal Kaur and a relative of the boy’s mother, had arranged the second marriage. However, a dispute arose when Veerpal Kaur failed to pay the promised amount of Rs 50,000, leading to her son being kept with the accused.
As tensions escalated over the unpaid sum, the accused and her husband allegedly took drastic measures. Sub-Inspector Amarjit Singh, SHO of Nihal Singh Wala police station, revealed that the boy was murdered by the couple and his body was callously discarded in a drain in Lohara village, where his paternal family resides.
Legal Action and Absconding Suspects
An FIR was promptly registered at Nihal Singh Wala police station under sections 103, 238, and 3(5) of BNS against Veerpal Kaur and her husband, Surjit Singh of Barnala. However, both suspects are currently on the run, evading authorities. The SHO confirmed that the police had initiated inquest proceedings upon the initial discovery of the body, but it was only after the boy’s mother arrived in Moga and recounted the harrowing ordeal that the victim was identified.
Presently, the boy’s mother resides in Longowal of Sangrur district, grappling with the devastating loss of her son and seeking justice for his untimely demise.
