Arrests Made in Connection with Hathras Stampede Tragedy

The Uttar Pradesh Police have made significant progress in the investigation into the tragic stampede at a religious gathering in Hathras, which claimed the lives of 121 individuals. Six individuals, including two women, have been arrested in connection with the incident. These individuals have been identified as volunteers of the local preacher, Suraj Pal, also known as Narayan Sakar Vishwa Hari or ‘Bhole Baba’, who addressed the satsang.

Key Arrests and Missing Suspect

Among those arrested is ‘mukhya sevadar’ Devprakash Madhukar, who is currently absconding. The police have announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for any information leading to his arrest. While the preacher, Suraj Pal, has not been named in the FIR, the investigation is ongoing to determine his involvement in the tragedy.

Background of the Accused

The arrested individuals have been identified as Ram Ladaite Yadav from Mainpuri, Upendra Singh Yadav from Firozabad, and Manju Devi Yadav, Megh Singh, Mukesh Kumar, and Manju Yadav, all from Hathras. These individuals were reportedly members of the organizing committee and worked as volunteers, responsible for crowd mobilization and donation collection.

Details of the Tragic Incident

According to Aligarh Division Inspector General of Police Shalabh Mathur, the volunteers failed to control the crowd when the preacher’s convoy moved ahead, leading to chaos and the resulting stampede. Investigations have also revealed that the volunteers obstructed police personnel from capturing photos and videos of the event, indicating potential criminal conspiracy.

Legal Actions and Charges

The FIR has been registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, attempt to commit culpable homicide, wrongful restraint, disobedience to orders by public servants, and causing disappearance of evidence.

Upcoming Visit by Rahul Gandhi

In response to the tragic incident, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal announced that Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, will visit Hathras on Friday to interact with those affected by the stampede. This visit aims to provide support and solidarity to the victims and their families during this difficult time..
