Arrest of Suspected Key Conspirator in NEET-UG Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into irregularities in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET)-UG case. Aman Singh, the suspected key conspirator, has been apprehended in Dhanbad, Jharkhand. This arrest comes on the heels of the recent capture of Dr. Ehsaan Ul Haq and Imtiaz Alam, who were working as the principal and vice principal of the Oasis School in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand. Haq, who was appointed as the city coordinator for the NEET-UG exam 2024, is believed to have played a pivotal role in the alleged malpractices.

Additional Arrests in Bihar

The CBI has not stopped at just one arrest. In a separate operation in Patna, Bihar, the central agency arrested two more individuals, Manish Prakash and Ashutosh. These individuals were found to be involved in facilitating the cheating scheme. While Ashutosh provided safe house premises for the students, Manish transported the candidates in his car and took them to a school for “preparation” ahead of the exam. The arrests in Jharkhand and Bihar shed light on the extent of the network involved in the NEET-UG irregularities.

Government Entrusts CBI with NEET-UG Investigation

The central government had taken a serious view of the reported irregularities in the NEET-UG case and entrusted the CBI with a comprehensive investigation. Multiple FIRs have been registered by the CBI, covering various aspects such as paper leaks, impersonation of candidates, and cheating. The move to involve the CBI came after widespread protests across the country, with demands to disband the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducted the NEET-UG examination.

Supreme Court’s Involvement in NEET-UG Probe

The Supreme Court is closely monitoring the developments in the NEET-UG case. A batch of pleas alleging paper leaks and irregularities in the exam is scheduled to be heard on July 8. The pleas are listed before a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. The apex court had earlier sought a response from the NTA on the allegations and emphasized the need to maintain the sanctity of the examination process.

Response from NTA and Centre

In response to the allegations, the NTA and Centre took action to address the concerns raised. The grace marks awarded to 1,563 candidates were cancelled, and candidates were given the option to either take a re-test or forgo the compensatory marks. A total of 813 students opted for the retest held on June 23 across seven centres. The measures taken by the NTA and Centre demonstrate a commitment to upholding the integrity of the NEET-UG examination process..
