Early this morning, the Delaware State Police responded to an armed carjacking incident at a Wawa store located at 117 South Dupont Highway in New Castle. The incident occurred at approximately 2:18 AM, when an unidentified suspect confronted a 25-year-old victim in the parking lot.

## Suspect Description and Actions

According to the police report, the suspect, described only as an unknown black male, demanded the victim’s car keys while displaying a firearm by lifting his shirt. The victim complied, and the suspect subsequently fled in the victim’s Honda Accord toward State Route 273.

## Investigation Ongoing

As of now, surveillance footage or images of the suspect are not available. The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Robbery Unit is actively investigating the incident and is seeking any information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the suspect involved.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz has announced the sentencing of Dennis Vassilenko, a reputed member of the Crips 8 Trey gang, to 20 years to life in prison for the 2021 murder of 17-year-old Eduardo Hernandez-Martinez. The sentencing follows a jury trial where Vassilenko was convicted of second-degree murder for the shooting, which took place in front of a Corona barbershop.

## Details of the Murder

The incident occurred on July 7, 2021, when Hernandez-Martinez met with Vassilenko to sell marijuana. According to court records, video surveillance captured Vassilenko leading the victim from a smoke shop to the location of the shooting. Vassilenko then fatally shot Hernandez-Martinez at point-blank range while the latter held a bag of marijuana. Following the shooting, Vassilenko fled in a getaway car driven by co-defendant Stephanie Pena.

## Co-Defendant Sentenced

Pena, who was implicated as an accessory, pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution and was sentenced in June 2022 to one to three years in prison.

## Sentencing and Justice

District Attorney Katz emphasized the sentence as a commitment to removing guns from the streets and prosecuting criminal elements, expressing hope that the verdict brings some solace to the victim’s family. Vassilenko, also accused of violent behavior in Rikers Island, was sentenced by Justice Kenneth Holder.

A devastating motor vehicle collision on McMullen Highway (Route 220) in the Rawlings area resulted in the deaths of two local residents. The incident occurred on Monday, July 1, 2024, and involved two vehicles with each driver trapped inside upon the arrival of emergency services.

## Victims identified

The deceased were identified as 35-year-old Zachary Michael Robinson and 41-year-old Laura Michelle Wilson, both from Rawlings, Maryland. Despite the life-saving efforts of law enforcement and emergency personnel, both Robinson and Wilson succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office has handed over the collision investigation to their specialized Crash Team. Additional support is being provided by the Cumberland City Police Crash Team and drone pilots from Mountain Maryland Search and Rescue.
