Tragic Death of Muntaj Sheikh in West Bengal’s Murshidabad

A 49-year-old Muslim man, Muntaj Sheikh, hailing from Durgapur village in West Bengal’s Murshidabad, met a tragic end under suspicious circumstances at Lalbagh sub-jail. The incident has left his family in turmoil, with allegations of foul play and police brutality surrounding his death.

Family’s Allegations and Suspicious Circumstances

According to reports, Muntaj was one of the individuals arrested during a police raid in Islampur’s Durgapur area on Wednesday, 5 June, in search of heroin bars. After being produced before the court the next day, he was sent to Lalbagh sub-jail. However, tragedy struck when he fell ill on Saturday, 8 June, and was rushed to the hospital, where he eventually passed away.

Upon receiving Muntaj’s body after an autopsy, his family was shocked to find signs of physical trauma, leading them to believe that he was subjected to brutal violence while in police custody. His mother, Jaherun Bewa, tearfully recounted how the police allegedly beat her son in front of their eyes, both at the camp and the police station, ultimately leading to his untimely demise.

Denial and Demand for Justice

However, Lalbagh Sub-Jail Superintendent Samaresh Dey refuted the family’s claims, attributing Muntaj’s death to his drug addiction. The family and their supporters, including Abdul Goni Mondal from the APDR, vehemently demand justice for the deceased, insisting that the police officers responsible for his alleged torture and death be held accountable.

Amidst the conflicting narratives, the district police officials maintain that Muntaj was lawfully arrested and brought before the court before being placed in the correctional facility. They assert that the cause of his death remains unknown and are calling for a fair investigation into the matter.

Community Outrage and Calls for Legal Action

Mahera Bibi, a relative of the deceased, spoke out against the police’s actions, highlighting the lack of transparency and accountability in Muntaj’s arrest and subsequent treatment. The human rights organization APDR has pledged to support the family in their quest for justice, promising legal assistance and advocacy on their behalf.

As the community grapples with the tragic loss of Muntaj Sheikh, the demand for accountability and transparency in law enforcement practices grows louder. The need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is paramount, as his family seeks closure and justice for their beloved son and brother.
