Tragic Shooting Incident in Smith County
A Tyler man has been charged with murder following a fatal shooting in Smith County on Sunday night. The incident took place in the 8900 block of CR 4136 in northern Smith County at approximately 6:30 p.m. According to Smith County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Sgt. Larry Christian, deputies responded to a call reporting a man had been shot multiple times and was unresponsive.
Victim identified as Kelly Eduardo Torrez
Upon arrival at the scene, deputies found the victim, identified as Kelly Eduardo Torrez, 22, of Tyler, in a bedroom of the house. Despite attempts to perform CPR and other life-saving measures, Torrez was pronounced dead at UT Health ER in Tyler shortly after. Torrez was said to be celebrating his birthday at his home when the tragic incident occurred.
Suspect Identified as Melvin Orlando Guevara
Criminal investigators and the Crime Scene Unit were called to the location to begin their investigation. The suspect, identified as Melvin Orlando Guevara, 21, of Tyler, was quickly apprehended. Guevara was known to be a friend of Torrez’s ex-girlfriend, and reports suggest that he entered the victim’s home with a pistol and shot Torrez multiple times before fleeing the scene.
Arrest Warrant Issued for Guevara
Following the incident, investigators obtained an arrest warrant affidavit and presented it to Judge Clay White. The judge issued a warrant for Guevara on the charge of murder, with a bond set at $500,000. Guevara was located by Tyler Police officers at Highway 31 East and Loop 323, where he was taken into custody without incident.

Guevara was booked into the Smith County Jail on the murder charge and remains incarcerated as of Monday morning.
