A Carrboro man tragically drowned in Jordan Lake on Tuesday evening, according to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office. The victim was identified as 52-year-old Eduardo Martinez, who was swimming in the lake near the intersection of Martha’s Chapel Road and Farrington Road when the incident occurred.

**Family’s Helpless Observation**

Martinez’s family members were present at the scene and witnessed him struggling in the water. Despite their attempts to help him, they were unable to rescue him. The family promptly called the sheriff’s office at 8:47 p.m., and emergency services rushed to the area. Unfortunately, despite the swift response, Martinez drowned, and his body was recovered later that night.

**Sheriff’s Condolences**

Chatham County Sheriff Mike Roberson expressed his condolences, stating, “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Eduardo Martinez during this very difficult time. Losing a loved one in such a sudden and tragic manner is devastating, and we are here to support the family in any way we can.”

**Safety Tips Urged**

This tragic incident marks the third drowning at Jordan Lake this summer, following the deaths of a 25-year-old from Charlotte on June 15 and a 16-year-old from Winston-Salem over Memorial Day weekend. As a result, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office issued a series of safety tips for those visiting Jordan Lake or any other bodies of water, especially with the upcoming Fourth of July holiday.

**Safety Tips for Visitors**

The sheriff’s office urges visitors to wear a life jacket, swim only in designated areas, supervise children closely, and be aware of water conditions. Taking these precautions can help prevent similar heartbreaking incidents. Sheriff Roberson emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety while enjoying the natural resources that the county has to offer.

**Collaborative Rescue Efforts**

In addition to the sheriff’s office, first responders from the North Chatham Fire Department, FirstHealth Emergency Medical Services, Chatham County Emergency Management, and the Medical Examiner’s office assisted in the attempted rescue and recovery of Martinez. The victim’s family is receiving support and assistance from the sheriff’s office’s victim services unit following his tragic passing.

**Ongoing Investigations and Support**

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Martinez’s drowning. The family and loved ones of the deceased are being provided with the necessary support and resources during this difficult time.
