As I sat in the living room, I couldn’t help but overhear the ominous reports coming from the television. My dad, glued to MSNBC, seemed to be in a state of panic as the news anchors painted a picture of impending doom. According to them, the world was on the brink of collapse, and the only solution was to stockpile firearms like the 9mm.

I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at the fear-mongering that seemed to permeate cable news these days. It was as if every channel was competing to see who could instill the most fear in their viewers. I could only imagine what Fox News was saying on the other side of the spectrum – probably something equally as dire, but with a different political spin.

It was moments like these that made me realize just how toxic cable news had become in America. Instead of providing unbiased information and fostering healthy debate, it seemed more interested in polarizing the population and stoking fear and anger. It was no wonder that the country seemed more divided than ever.

As I glanced over at my dad, who was now muttering about the end of the world, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of sadness. Here was a man who had worked hard all his life, only to be bombarded with messages of impending disaster on a daily basis. It was no wonder he was starting to believe that the apocalypse was just around the corner.

I made a mental note to have a conversation with him later about the importance of critical thinking and not taking everything the media said at face value. It was important to question the motives behind the news stories and to seek out multiple sources of information before forming an opinion.

But for now, I decided to change the channel to something more lighthearted. I couldn’t bear to listen to any more doom and gloom predictions about the end of the world. Maybe a comedy special would help lighten the mood and remind us that there was still joy and laughter to be found in the world, despite what the cable news networks might have us believe.
