According to reports from the Iredell Free News, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper stopped to check on two individuals who were replacing a flat tire on a Hyundai Elantra on Interstate 40 at around 9 a.m. on Tuesday. The individuals provided false identifications to the trooper, and further investigation revealed that the passenger, Keonte Shakir Forney, may have been wanted for something.
While the trooper was conducting a background check, Gray abruptly drove off, heading east on Interstate 40. The trooper pursued the Elantra as it continued east on the interstate before taking Exit 150 towards N.C. Highway 15 in Statesville. Tragically, at the bottom of the exit ramp, the Elantra collided with the rear end of a FedEx truck.
