Investigation into Serious Injury Traffic Crash

The Lorain Police Department is reaching out to the public for assistance in gathering information about a serious injury traffic crash that occurred on June 30. According to a recent news release, the incident took place at 3:22 a.m. in front of 1654 E. 29th St.

Details of the Crash

Initial investigations revealed that a blue 2003 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck was speeding down East 29th Street when it collided with a silver 2009 Mercedes Benz C300 that was travelling in the opposite direction. The impact caused the pickup truck to veer off the road and come to a stop on its side, where it subsequently caught fire. The Mercedes Benz also spun around and caught fire before coming to a halt facing eastbound.

Injuries and Hospitalization

The driver of the pickup truck, a 34-year-old man from Lorain, sustained minor injuries in the crash and was rushed to Mercy Health — Lorain Hospital for treatment. However, he was reportedly uncooperative with officers during the initial investigation. The driver of the Mercedes Benz, a 49-year-old Lorain resident, suffered serious injuries and was also taken to Mercy Health for medical care.

Possible Factors in the Crash

Authorities suspect that excessive speed and reckless driving played a significant role in the collision. Additionally, alcohol and/or drugs are believed to have been contributing factors. The Lorain Police Department Traffic Bureau, along with assistance from the Lorain Fire Department, LifeCare Ambulance, and Sugar Ridge Towing, spent four hours processing the crash scene for evidence.

Appeal for Information

Surveillance footage from the area suggests that a third vehicle was involved in the incident. The driver of this vehicle either witnessed the crash or was directly involved but fled the scene before the authorities arrived. The police are urging anyone with information about the crash to contact Sgt. Kyle Gelenius of the Lorain Police Department Traffic Bureau at 440-204-2115.
