Nebraska Community Shocked After Racially Motivated Shooting

In a quiet Nebraska community, residents were left reeling after a tragic incident unfolded on Friday evening. Police received multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting in Crete, and when they arrived on the scene, they discovered a harrowing sight. A 74-year-old man, identified as Billy Booth, had opened fire from his home, injuring seven people in the yard of a neighbouring house.

Suspect’s Troubled Past Comes to Light

As authorities delved into Booth’s background, a troubling picture emerged. It was revealed that Booth had a history of animosity towards the family who lived next door. Reports had been made about Booth shouting at them to “go home” and to “speak English.” While the exact motive behind the shooting is still under investigation, authorities are not ruling out the possibility that it was racially motivated.

Victims Struggle to Come to Terms with Trauma

The victims of the shooting, three adults and four children ranging in age from 3 to 43, are now faced with the daunting task of healing from their physical and emotional wounds. A representative from the League of United Latin American Citizens, who is supporting the family, shared that they have been deeply affected by the events of that fateful evening. The family, originally from Guatemala, has called Crete home for the past decade.

Community Comes Together in Wake of Tragedy

In the aftermath of the shooting, the community of Crete has banded together to offer support and comfort to those affected. Crete Mayor Dave Bauer emphasised that the actions of one individual do not define the entire community. He reassured residents that Crete remains a close-knit and supportive town, where such acts of violence are not representative of the overall spirit of the community.

Reflections on a Troubled Neighbor

As neighbours grapple with the shock of what transpired, many have come forward to share their experiences with Booth. Sawyer Hanson, the grandson of one of Booth’s neighbours, recalled moments of unpredictability in Booth’s behaviour. While there had been previous issues with him, nothing had foreshadowed the tragic events that unfolded. Hanson shared, “Sometimes, he was just a normal person and nothing really you would even think of. And then other times, he was kind of just yelling about anything or everything. No one really did anything to him to ever get any of that anger out of him.”
