Details of the Shooting
According to officers, the shooting occurred around 4:30 a.m. Sunday after an assault inside the home escalated outside. Shots were fired at a parked car on the shoulder of the highway and another car at a nearby gas station. One man with gunshot wounds was found in the parked car and later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
Victim’s Background
In an emotional press conference, Det. Sgt. Daryl Reid shared that Tobenna Obiaga came from a large, loving family who are devastated by his untimely death. Described as a person with no previous police involvement, his loved ones are struggling to comprehend why such a tragedy would befall him.
Other Victims and Suspect
Two individuals in the car at the gas station sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were subsequently discharged from the hospital. Additionally, a fourth person with minor non-firearm-related injuries received treatment and was released. All three victims are reported to be from the Greater Toronto Area. Despite witness reports of a dark-grey sedan fleeing the scene, no suspect has been identified thus far.
Police Investigation
Detectives revealed that approximately 60 to 100 people attended the ill-fated house party. While some partygoers were questioned by law enforcement at the scene, others had left before the police arrived. Authorities are urging those who departed early to come forward with any relevant information. The owner of the rental property is said to be cooperating with the investigation, with search warrants set to be executed at the residence and several vehicles.
