The Tragic Bus Crash in Queensland

In a devastating turn of events, a bus crash in northern Queensland has left three women dead and several others injured. The Greyhound coach, carrying thirty-three passengers, collided with a four-wheel-drive towing a caravan on the Bruce Highway at Gumlu, south of Townsville. The initial investigations have revealed that the bus had crossed onto the wrong side of the road, leading to the fatal accident.

Victims and Survivors

Among the victims of the crash was a 56-year-old Townsville woman who was travelling back from Brisbane with her daughter. Tragically, she did not survive the impact. Another woman in her 20s and a woman in her 30s also lost their lives in the accident. The daughter of the Townsville woman, who was sitting next to her during the journey, miraculously escaped serious injury.

On the other hand, the bus driver and two elderly individuals in the four-wheel-drive managed to escape without serious harm. The driver, who has undergone blood and urine tests, is currently receiving treatment for mental health issues at the hospital.

Investigations and Road Conditions

The Forensic Crash Unit is currently investigating the cause of the crash, with early indications suggesting that the bus veered onto the wrong side of the road. The incident occurred near the Wilson Creek Rest Area on the Bruce Highway at Gumlu, a section of the highway between Bowen and Ayr. This stretch of the highway is a single lane in each direction with a painted median, no passing or overtaking lanes, and no shoulder, posing potential risks for motorists.

Reactions and Calls for Improvement

Queensland Premier Steven Miles expressed his sympathies to those affected by the tragedy, emphasizing the ongoing need for investment in the Bruce Highway. Opposition Leader David Crisafulli echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the inadequacies of the road infrastructure and calling for improvements to ensure the safety of all road users. The Bruce Highway, spanning 1700km from Brisbane to Cairns, serves as a vital transport corridor for Queensland’s major population centres.
