The grandson of one of Booth’s neighbors, Sawyer Hanson, revealed that there had been previous issues with Booth, but nothing as extreme as this violent outburst. Booth had been described as a normal person at times, but other times, he would inexplicably unleash his anger on those around him.
A Troubled History
Crete’s police chief disclosed that Booth and the family of the victims had a history of conflict. There were reports of Booth shouting at them to “go home” and to “speak English,” indicating potential racial motivations behind the attack. Members of the injured family, who have chosen to remain anonymous, are currently receiving assistance from the League of United Latin American Citizens. The family, originally from Guatemala, has been deeply traumatized by the events of the past few days. Despite the tragedy, Crete Mayor Dave Bauer emphasized that the shooting does not reflect the true spirit of the community.
