The Arrest of Raman Vijaykumar Taneja

In a recent development, the Kalmeshwar police of Nagpur Rural have successfully apprehended a man from Uttar Pradesh in connection with a fake medicine racket that was unearthed in March 2023. The accused, identified as Raman Vijaykumar Taneja, was taken into custody by a police team from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

The Exposed Racket

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had previously exposed the racket of substandard medicine in a Government-run hospital in Maharashtra. The authorities seized a stock of 21,600 tablets of Ciprofloxacin (Recip-500) from the government’s storehouse at Nagpur’s Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH).

Investigation and Arrest

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the substandard drugs, valued at crores of rupees, were manufactured in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The authorities are diligently working on leads to identify the individuals responsible for the production of these counterfeit drugs. Recently, the Kalmeshwar Police made a breakthrough by arresting Raman Vijaykumar Taneja in connection with the fake medicine racket.

The Accused and Legal Action

Raman Vijaykumar Taneja, a resident of Janta Road, Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, was identified as one of the key players in the distribution of the substandard medicines. The drugs were allegedly purchased by the District Civil Surgeon through a contract process. Three other individuals, including prime accused Vijay Shailendra Choudhary, Hemant Dhondiba Mule, and Mihir Trivedi, were booked in connection with the case.

The Drug Testing Process

The investigation was initiated when FDA officials collected samples of Recip-500 tablets containing Ciprofloxacin from the Rural Hospital at Kalmeshwar. The samples were sent to a Government Laboratory for testing, and the results, which were received in December 2023, indicated that the tablets had no medicinal value.

Raid and Seizure

Further investigation revealed that the drugs were manufactured by a fictitious company named Refined Pharma in Gujarat, a company that does not exist in India. As a result, the FDA conducted a raid at a government store at IGGMC and seized a significant stock of 21,600 tablets.

Legal Action Taken

A case was registered at the Kalmeshwar police station under Sections 420, 468, 471, 276, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. The arrest of Raman Vijaykumar Taneja was facilitated under the guidance of SP Dr. Harssh Poddar, with the assistance of ASP and Saoner SDPO Anil Mhaske (IPS), API Ashishsingh Thakur, PSI Dattatrey Kolte, and other dedicated staff members.
