Community Seeks Accountability for Teen’s Death
Nyah Mway’s family and community members are calling for accountability in the wake of his death. Residents of Karen descent in Utica are planning to meet with Mayor Michael P Galime to press for answers and justice. At a vigil held in Nyah’s honor, his brother, Lah, expressed the family’s determination to see the officers involved held accountable for their actions. Others at the vigil also questioned the official account of the shooting, stating that “none of it adds up”.
Controversy Surrounds Police Actions
According to the police, Nyah Mway and another 13-year-old boy were stopped because they fit descriptions of suspects in an armed robbery. The body camera footage shows an officer attempting to pat them down for weapons before Nyah runs away and appears to point a black object at them. The officers believed it was a handgun, but it was later revealed to be a BB gun that closely resembled a real firearm. Despite this revelation, Officer Patrick Husnay opened fire, fatally shooting Nyah in the chest.
Officers Placed on Leave as Investigations Proceed
Following the shooting, Officers Husnay, Patterson, and Citriniti have been placed on paid administrative leave while investigations are ongoing. The New York attorney general’s office is looking into the incident, as is the Utica Police Department to determine if proper procedures were followed. Police Chief Mark Williams described the shooting as a “tragic and traumatic incident for all involved”.
