The Fatal Shooting of Nyah Mway

In a tragic turn of events, 13-year-old Nyah Mway was fatally shot by an officer in upstate New York after he ran from police and pointed a replica handgun at them. The incident occurred late Friday in Utica, a city located about 240 miles northwest of Manhattan.

Police Investigation Turns Deadly

According to Utica Police Chief Mark Williams, officers stopped Nyah and another youth for an unspecified “police investigation.” Nyah fled from the officers and brandished what appeared to be a real handgun. In the ensuing struggle, an officer fired a single shot that struck Nyah in the chest. Despite receiving immediate first aid from the officers, Nyah succumbed to his injuries at Wynn Hospital.

Tragic Misunderstanding

The replica gun carried by Nyah closely resembled a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun, complete with detachable magazine and serial numbers. However, it was later determined that the gun only fired pellets or BB’s. The confusion over the authenticity of the weapon led to the fatal shooting of the young boy.

Community Outcry and Investigations

Following the incident, a bystander video posted on Facebook captured the moments leading up to the shooting. The footage shows one of the officers chasing Nyah, tackling him to the ground, and subsequently shooting him. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave with pay.

A Tragic Loss

Nyah Mway, an 8th grader at Donovan Middle School, was a refugee born in Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority.
