In a recent development, the Crime Investigation Department (CID), Assam, along with local police, have apprehended nine individuals, including three government officials, in connection with the Gauhati University mark sheet scam. This scandal came to light after the Postgraduate Students’ Union of Gauhati University raised concerns about a suspected racket operating within the institution.

According to reports, students alleged that a group within the university was manipulating marks during the evaluation process in exchange for significant sums of money. The students claimed that for a single paper, the culprits demanded ₹16,000, while for an entire semester’s worth of papers, the rate was a staggering ₹100,000. It was further revealed that employees from various departments within the university were complicit in the scam.
Chief Minister Steps In
The gravity of the situation prompted Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to direct the education department and police to launch a thorough investigation. Following this directive, the CID was tasked with uncovering the truth behind the illicit activities occurring at Gauhati University.
Accused Individuals Apprehended
After conducting raids in several locations, including Guwahati, Barpeta, and Dhubri, law enforcement authorities managed to arrest nine suspects, including Azizul Haque, Krishan Krishnamurti, Ismail Hussain, Alomgir Khan, Moinul Haque, Hamezuddin, Abul Baser, Aminul Islam, and Shivtosh Mahato. Krishan Krishnamurti, an employee of Gauhati University, Shivtosh Mahato from Dhubri Law College, and Aminul Islam, a librarian at a Barpeta college, were among those apprehended.
Ongoing Investigation
CID officials have stated that the investigation is still ongoing, with the possibility of more arrests in the future. They have gathered substantial evidence and are currently interrogating the detained individuals to shed light on the extent of the scam.
University Response
Gauhati University’s Vice-Chancellor, Pratap Jyoti Handique, revealed that an employee of the Integrated University Management System (IUMS) is believed to be the mastermind behind the fraudulent activities.
