Relatives of Nyah Mway, a 13-year-old boy born in Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority, are demanding justice after he was shot and killed by police in central New York. The incident occurred after Nyah Mway and another 13-year-old boy were stopped by police for fitting the description of suspects in an armed robbery.

Community Outrage

Members of the immigrant community from Myanmar are coming together to press local officials for accountability in the shooting of Nyah Mway. The state attorney general is currently investigating the incident, while the Utica police are conducting their own probe. Body camera footage released by the police shows Nyah Mway appearing to aim an object at the officers before they shot him. The object turned out to be a BB gun that closely resembled a real firearm.

Call for Accountability

At a vigil held in memory of Nyah Mway, his brother, Lah, expressed the family’s desire to see the officers involved in the shooting held accountable. The community members present at the vigil also questioned the official account of the incident, with some stating that the details provided by the police did not add up.

Police Investigation

According to the police, Nyah Mway attempted to flee from the officers and pointed what appeared to be a black handgun at them. In response, Officer Patrick Husnay opened fire, striking Nyah Mway in the chest. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave while investigations are ongoing.

Community Impact

Utica, with a population of over 65,000, is home to more than 4,200 people from Myanmar, including Nyah Mway and his family. The Karens, a group to which Nyah Mway belonged, have been engaged in conflict with the military rulers of Myanmar. Nyah Mway and his family came to the United States nine years ago, seeking refuge from the political unrest in their home country.
