The Tragic Shooting of Nyah Mway

The city of Utica, New York, was rocked by a tragic incident on Friday night when police officers shot and killed 13-year-old Nyah Mway. The young teenager was approached by three officers after he and another 13-year-old matched the descriptions of robbery suspects. Nyah Mway, a refugee born in Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority, was walking in the roadway when he was stopped by the officers.

The Encounter with Police

According to the Utica Police Department, Nyah Mway and the other juvenile were in the immediate vicinity of a previous robbery at nearly the same time of day. When the officers attempted to conduct a citizen stop, Nyah Mway immediately fled on foot. During the pursuit, he pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it at the police officers. One of the officers discharged his firearm, shooting Nyah Mway in the chest during a ground struggle. Despite immediate first aid efforts, Nyah Mway succumbed to his injuries at Wynn Hospital.

The Replica Gun

The replica gun carried by Nyah Mway was later identified as a realistic appearing firearm with GLOCK markings, signatures, detachable magazine, and serial numbers. However, it was determined to only fire pellets or BB’s. The body camera footage released by the police shows a chaotic scene where Nyah Mway appears to point the replica handgun at police while fleeing. The officers believed it was a real handgun, leading to the tragic outcome.

Community Outcry

The shooting of Nyah Mway has sparked outrage in the Utica community, with tensions running high at a news conference held by the police department. Audience members booed and interrupted the police chief and Utica mayor, making it difficult for transparency in the investigation. A small group staged a protest outside the Utica Police station, demanding justice for Nyah Mway, who tragically lost his life at just 13 years old.

Ongoing Investigations

There are two ongoing, parallel investigations into the incident, one by the New York State Attorney General and another by the Utica Police Department’s Professional Standards. The community, including Nyah Mway’s family, is seeking answers and justice for the young teenager who was taken too soon.
