Driver Faces Assault Charges After Chasing and Crashing Into Motorcyclist

A 60-year-old Beaverton driver, David J. Bumgardner, is currently facing assault charges following a disturbing incident on Wednesday on Highway 26, as reported by Portland police. The incident involved a collision between Bumgardner’s 2006 Subaru Legacy Outback and a 2016 Yamaha motorcycle ridden by 47-year-old Tha Ouk of Vancouver.

Details of the Crash

The crash occurred just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday on eastbound Highway 26 at the Southwest Sylvan Road overpass. Police arrived at the scene to find the Subaru on its roof near the crashed motorcycle. Ouk sustained serious injuries and was promptly taken to the hospital by ambulance. Fortunately, he is expected to recover from the ordeal. Bumgardner, on the other hand, did not report any injuries.

Alleged Chain of Events

According to the Portland Police Bureau’s initial investigation, the incident began when Ouk was allegedly riding between lanes, an illegal manoeuvre in Oregon. As Ouk’s motorcycle approached Bumgardner’s Subaru, the Beaverton man believed that his car had been struck and proceeded to chase after Ouk at high speed.

Chilling Pursuit

Bumgardner reportedly pulled onto the shoulder and pursued Ouk, eventually catching up to him when the motorcyclist slowed for a traffic control sign. Tragically, Bumgardner was unable to stop in time, resulting in a collision that saw his car rolling on top of Ouk’s body. Thankfully, passing drivers stopped to assist and managed to lift the car to free Ouk.

Legal Ramifications

Following the incident, Bumgardner was taken into custody and booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center. He now faces charges of second and third-degree assault, reckless driving, and recklessly endangering another person. Meanwhile, Ouk received citations for driving uninsured, careless driving, failure to drive within a lane, driving without a motorcycle endorsement, and failing to register a motor vehicle.
