A devastating incident took place on Friday morning on Māmalahoa Highway, resulting in the tragic death of 21-year-old Alvin Godfrey Castro III, a resident of Kona. The Hawaii Police Department has launched a negligent homicide investigation following the two-vehicle crash that occurred just north of the 23-mile marker on Highway 190.
Details of the Collision
According to the Hawaii Police Department news release, the collision occurred at 4:47 a.m. when a southbound green 2015 Subaru Forester, driven by a 40-year-old woman from Hilo, crossed the double solid yellow line in an attempt to pull over onto the mauka shoulder of the roadway. As there was no shoulder on the makai side, the driver made a fateful decision that led to the fatal crash.
The Subaru collided head-on with a northbound silver 2000 Acura Integra sedan, driven by Alvin Godfrey Castro III. Despite being rushed to North Hawaii Community Hospital, Castro tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 6:25 a.m. The female driver of the Subaru was also injured in the crash and remains hospitalized at Kona Community Hospital for treatment.
