Attempted Assassination on Mexican TV Host

In a shocking turn of events, Mexican television host Ciro Gómez Leyva narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in December 2022. While driving home from work, two assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on his car with an automatic weapon. Fortunately, Gómez’s vehicle was equipped with bullet-proof windows and doors, saving his life.

Mastermind Behind the Attack

Following the incident, surveillance video led investigators to one of the suspects, who implicated a man known as “El Patrón” or “The Boss” as the mastermind behind the assassination plot. The U.S. Attorney in San Diego identified the alleged mastermind as Armando Escárcega Valdez, a lawyer from Mexico City. Escárcega had reportedly fled to Southern California after the failed attempt on Gómez’s life.

Extradition to Face Charges

After months of investigation, Escárcega appeared in a federal courtroom in San Diego and agreed to be extradited to Mexico to face charges related to the assassination plot. Despite his extradition, Escárcega maintained his innocence, as confirmed by his attorney during the court proceedings.

Legal Troubles and Arrest

Escárcega’s legal troubles began in January of the previous year when a court in Mexico issued a warrant for his arrest. Evidence found at his home and law office implicated him in the murder plot, leading to a nationwide manhunt. Wiretaps also provided further evidence linking Escárcega to the attempted assassination.

Facing Multiple Charges

The extradition process is expected to send Escárcega back to Mexico, where he will face charges of conspiracy, extortion, and attempted murder. His return to Mexico will mark the culmination of a lengthy legal battle that began with his arrest in Bakersfield, California, last October.
