According to a news release from the Hawaiʻi Police Department, the investigation began when an elderly man discovered his wife unresponsive on the floor of their residence on Uhini Ana Road. Despite the efforts of Hawai‘i Fire Department medics, Kim showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Hilo Benioff Medical Center. A forensic pathologist later determined that the cause of death was strangulation, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
