Upon arriving at the scene, officers encountered two individuals, one of whom was later identified as Cortez Desean Ireland, a 23-year-old resident of Winston-Salem. Ireland was allegedly armed with a firearm at the time of the confrontation.
As officers approached the individuals, one of them reportedly fired at the police, striking a patrol vehicle. In response, an officer discharged their weapon four times before the suspects fled the scene. Fortunately, no one was injured during the exchange of gunfire.
Investigations revealed that prior to the police arriving, Ireland and the unidentified individual had been at an apartment with two women, aged 19 and 22. Allegedly, Ireland assaulted one of the women, held them at gunpoint, and fired a shot into the ceiling before leaving the scene with the accomplice, taking a cell phone from one of the victims.

Following the incident, Ireland was apprehended and charged with various offenses, including felony possession of a firearm by a felon, felony robbery with a dangerous weapon, and felony second-degree kidnapping. Additionally, he faces misdemeanors such as domestic violence and assault on a female. Ireland was denied bond.
In a subsequent announcement, the police disclosed that Ireland is now also charged with felony attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon on law enforcement officers. He remains in custody without bond as the legal process unfolds.
