Tragic Shooting Leaves 23-Year-Old Woman Dead
A tragic incident unfolded in Kansas City when 23-year-old Chestina Gaskin lost her life in a shooting. The suspect, 22-year-old Travon Marcel Oliver, has been charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action in connection with the incident.
Details of the Shooting
The shooting took place on Wednesday, June 26, in the area of E. Linwood Boulevard and Garfield Avenue. Police responded to a call just after 12 p.m. and found Gaskin inside an apartment building with a gunshot wound to the left side of her head. Tragically, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initially, Oliver claimed that several men had entered the apartment and shot Gaskin. However, he later changed his story and admitted that the two had come to the apartment together. An argument ensued when Gaskin accused Oliver of being unfaithful.
Sequence of Events
According to court documents, Oliver stated that Gaskin picked up his firearm during the argument. He then grabbed the gun from her and began to back away. In the process, the gun accidentally discharged, fatally striking Gaskin in the head.
A silver Ruger 9 mm handgun was later found in the bushes behind the apartment building, corroborating Oliver’s account of the events.
Suspect in Custody
Travon Marcel Oliver is currently being held in the Jackson County jail on a $150,000 bond. A bond review hearing has been scheduled for Monday, July 8, at 1:30 p.m. as the investigation continues.
