Motorist Charged with Murder After Intentionally Running Down Motorcyclist in Thousand Palms
A tragic incident unfolded in Thousand Palms when a 30-year-old motorist, identified as Erick Robert Cowdery of Palm Desert, was charged with murder after allegedly intentionally running down a motorcyclist and attempting to flee the scene. The victim, 48-year-old Desert Hot Springs resident Robert Ernest Rodriguez, lost his life in the senseless act of violence.
The Incident
The incident took place at the intersection of Varner and Ramon roads in Thousand Palms around 1:30 p.m. on a Sunday. California Highway Patrol officers quickly determined that the victim had been intentionally struck by Cowdery. Bystanders at the scene restrained Cowdery as he attempted to flee until authorities arrived to take him into custody.
Investigation and Charges
Following the incident, the investigation was turned over to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office. Cowdery was subsequently charged with murder and is currently being held at the John Benoit Detention Center.
