A woman from Iowa is now facing murder charges after being found with a body at a crash scene in Olmsted County, Minnesota. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office filed the charges against 32-year-old Margot Lewis, one day after she was arraigned on a charge of interfering with a dead body in Olmsted County Court.

The incident began when Lewis was identified as the driver of a car that crashed into the median at the Hwy. 42/I-90 interchange south of Eyota around 7:00 on the morning of June 22. An Olmsted County Sheriff’s Deputy responding to the crash discovered the body of 35-year-old Liara Tsai in the back of the vehicle. The charges against Lewis indicate Tsai had died as a result of multiple sharp-force injuries before the crash.

Authorities executed a search warrant at Tsai’s Minneapolis apartment and found evidence of a violent incident. The murder charges filed in Hennepin County Court described a bloody scene with Tsai’s bed and bedding saturated with blood. A bloodied plastic and metal object were found in the bed, and a steak knife was missing from a knife set in the residence.

Security camera footage showed Tsai’s vehicle leaving the Minneapolis apartment complex around 4:30 on the morning of the incident. The driver’s outfit matched the clothing Lewis was seen wearing at the crash scene, and Tsai’s body was found wrapped up in the back of the vehicle.

Investigators discovered that Lewis and Tsai were previously in a romantic relationship. A former spouse of Tsai described the relationship as vile and mentioned that Lewis had flown to Minneapolis to visit Tsai on June 21. Lewis has not given a verbal statement to investigators and indicated a preference for communicating through sign language.

The crash that led to the body discovery is still under investigation. The charges suggest that Lewis was driving at an estimated speed of 105 mph before colliding with the guardrail. Lewis was also traveling with Tsai’s dog at the time of the crash.

Lewis is charged with two counts of second-degree murder and has not yet given a statement to investigators. After being medically cleared following the crash, she refused to speak and became combative when investigators tried to take a sample of her finger nails.

The missing knife has not been located, and the reason for Lewis traveling with Tsai’s body remains unknown. Lewis’s bail was set at $1 million without conditions, and her next court appearance is scheduled for July 5. The tragic incident has left many questions unanswered as the investigation continues to unfold.
