Still, McGuire isn’t giving up. She’s hired an attorney and plans to appeal the decision. “I want my name cleared,” she says. Montalto, the attorney, says McGuire’s story is all too common. “The military has a long history of scapegoating LGBTQ service members,” she says. “It’s a stain on their service record that they shouldn’t have to bear.” As for McGuire, she’s determined to keep fighting for justice. “I won’t stop until my record is cleared,” she says. “I deserve that much.” And she hopes that one day, the military will recognize the harm it caused LGBTQ service members and truly make amends. In the meantime, McGuire remains proud of her service, despite the injustice she faced. “I served my country to the best of my ability,” she says. “And I will continue to fight for what’s right.”.
